Yellowstone boss brands Matthew McConaughey a “natural fit” for spinoff

Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan has opened up about his upcoming spinoff series starring Matthew McConaughey.

Following rumours about Kevin Costner’s exit from the Western drama earlier this year, which Sheridan has now confirmed, it was announced that the fifth season of Yellowstone would be the show’s last.

But, to soften the blow, Sheridan offered Paramount a “new chapter” to the Yellowstone story with a spinoff starring McConaughey, who, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is in “late-stage negotiations”.

Discussing the show and McConaughey’s potential role in it, Sheridan said: “He seems like a natural fit. We had a few conversations over the years, and spitballed a few ideas. Then he started watching Yellowstone and responded to it.

“He was like, ‘I want to do that’. And by ‘that’, he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, ‘Buddy, that we can do’.”

Although the spinoff was announced as a sequel to Yellowstone, with rumours that some of the original cast members would return, Sheridan has now hinted that it will have a new cast and location.

“My idea of a spinoff is the same as my idea of a prequel — read into that what you will,” he said, before confirming that it would be a standalone story.

“There are lots of places where a way of life that existed for 150 years is slamming against a new way of life, but the challenges are completely different. There are a lot of places you can tell this story.”

Sheridan also discussed Costner’s exit in the interview, admitting he was “disappointed” because it “truncates the closure of his character”.
