There’s a Yellowstone movie heading to Netflix, but it’s not what you think

A Yellowstone movie is about to drop on Netflix, but those expecting something from the Taylor Sheridan universe will get a nasty surprise.

Yellowstone is one of the biggest TV shows of the last decade, with the combined talents of creator Taylor Sheridan and star Kevin Costner turning the Paramount series into a huge ratings winner.

The show launched in 2018, and just concluded after five seasons and 53 episodes. But that isn’t the end of the story, thanks to prequels and sequels like 1883, 1923, and The Madison.

A movie that has Yellowstone in the title is also hitting US Netflix this Thursday (April 24, 2025), but be warned, the film itself isn’t connected to the show.

The movie is called Murder at Yellowstone City, and released in cinemas and on VOD in June of 2022.

Richard Gray directed – from a script by Eric Belgau – while the cast features Gabriel Byrne, Thomas Jane, Isaiah Mustafa, Anna Camp, Nat Wolff, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Here’s how Netflix describes the film’s plot: “A quiet man newly freed from slavery faces a murder accusation, and an idealistic minister resolves to prove guilt lies elsewhere in their troubled town.”

But the reviews were less than stellar, with Murder at Yellowstone City managing a Rotten Tomatoes score of 25%, based on 20 reviews.

Variety was positive about the film, writing: “The various shootouts and action scenes scattered throughout the final third of Murder at Yellowstone City are excitingly and, better still, believably staged.”

But The LA Times was less keen, stating: “The disappointing western-mystery hybrid Murder at Yellowstone City strands an excellent cast in a slow-paced story with a muted tone, too far removed from its pulpy inspirations.”
