With Yellowstone’s on-screen universe continuing to expand, you might be wondering when all the spinoffs take place in the Dutton timeline.
Alongside the original Yellowstone series – which ended with its final season in November 2024 – two prequel shows already exist, alongside plans for a least three more spinoffs over the next few years.
Yellowstone tells the story of the Dutton family, who are trying to resolve conflicts along the shared borders of their large cattle ranch, which borders the Broken Rock Indian reservation, Yellowstone National Park, and land developers.
While Kevin Costner and Yellowstone itself have made their farewells, the cowboy antics live on in their subsequent spinoffs.
Yellowstone shows in chronological order
Since most of the Yellowstone shows are dated in their titles, it’s pretty easy to work out the order: the story starts with 1883 and ends with the main 2018-2024 series.
Bear in mind, some of the spinoffs are still in development, but when all is said and done, the full chronological timeline should look like this:
- 1883
- 1923
- 1944 (in development)
- Yellowstone
- Y: Marshals (in development)
- The Madison (in development)
- 6666 (in development)
1883

Takes place in: 1883
Taking place in the year that the title suggests, 1883 explores the post-Civil war generation of the Dutton family as they leave Tennessee. The family travels across the country before settling in Montana to establish what would eventually become the Yellowstone Ranch.
The show aired between 2021-2022, and it’s a one-and-done viewing, since there’s only one season of the miniseries. (Sorry to say, there are no plans for further installments of this era.)
Speaking to Deadline, creator Taylor Sheridan explained how the story felt more limited as a prequel. “We wanted to make a ten-hour movie that ended, and that’s what we did.”
The show starred country music icons Tim McGraw and Faith Hill alongside the likes of Isabel May and Sam Elliott.
1923 (Seasons 1 and 2)

Takes place in: 1923-1924
Jumping forward in time to arguably the most successful of the Yellowstone spin-offs, 1923 is unsurprisingly set in the year it is titled.
Looking at another generation of the Dutton family, the lead characters go through various hardships including Prohibition, drought, and the early stages of the Great Depression – which affected Montana before the 1929 Stock Market Crash.
Yellowstone 1923 Season 2 takes place just weeks after the first season finished off, so you’ll need to watch both seasons of this show before moving on to the next era of Duttons.
1944 (in development)

Takes place in: 1944
The only thing that’s been revealed about 1944 is the title. Thankfully, this at least lets everyone know where it lands in the chronological order of events. Still, based on this time period, it’s a good guess that this series will explore how WWII effected the family in Montana. And based on the 1923 ending, it’s likely this show will focus on the life of John Dutton II.
No cast or release date has been announced for this one, so in the meantime, feel free to skip straight ahead to the flagship Yellowstone series.
Yellowstone

Takes place in: 2018-2024
Nice and easy, the main Yellowstone series is takes place in modern day. Although it was the first show to be released (kicking off the entire franchise as we know it), it lands smack-bang in the middle of the timeline, if you count all the unreleased spinoffs.
Yellowstone follows John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) and his children, Beth, Kayce, and Jamie as they fight for power and control over their land. They face up against greedy real estate developers, who will stop at nothing to get a piece of their beautiful property and the land it sits on.
Y: Marshals

Takes place in: TBC
After first being reported as in the works in March 2025, CBS has given Y: Marshals a 13-episode order, with plans to begin shooting this summer. We’ll likely see this launch midseason 2026 on Sunday nights.
With Grime’s Kayce Dutton in the leading role, the spinoff is set to follow his life after selling off the majority of the Broken Rock Reservation.
As the logline puts it, “With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
The Madison (in development)

Takes place in: TBC
Formerly known as Yellowstone 2024, The Madison has officially been announced as a sequel to the original Yellowstone series.
Michelle Pfeiffer will lead its cast, though we don’t yet know anything about her role. The announcement has also squashed beliefs that Matthew McConaughey will star in the series… though he hasn’t been ruled out of other spinoffs just yet.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will be a “heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.”
6666 (in development)

Takes place in: TBC
Another numerical title but not one that corresponds with a year in history, 6666 is another of the Yellowstone spin-offs that are yet to be released.
This time around, fans might have a few more clues as to what the show will be about. In the main Yellowstone series, the 6666 ranch has already been seen, meaning it could have a closer link to the present day.
According to Variety, the synopsis for 6666 so far states: “The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately where world-class cowboys are born and made.” It’s also been reported that Sheridan bought the real-life 6666 ranch back in 2021.
