1923 Season 2 Episode 8 was supposed to drop last night… or was it? The Yellowstone spinoff series has already wrapped for good, but Apple TV users are being told differently.
If you haven’t seen Episode 7 of the hit Taylor Sheridan series, now’s the time to look away – we’re going to be reliving some hard truths. The final instalment of 1923 Season 2 wiped out seven main characters for good, with Spencer seen as never remarrying after Alex’s traumatic death.
We also learned the baby was actually John Dutton II, the father of Kevin Costner’s Dutton seen in the main series. 1923 is supposedly done for good after last week’s episode, but not according to Apple TV.
If you browse the platform, it’s currently showing 1923 Season 2 Episode 8 as ready to play. But why, and have fans missed something?
1923 Season 2 Episode 8 originally existed, and still does for Apple TV
Don’t panic – there’s no secret Yellowstone episode you’ve missed out on. Instead, 1923 Season 2 was originally believed to have eight episodes, but its finale was actually two hours condensed into one episode (Episode 7). Apple TV is clearly still logging the series as eight episodes, explaining why the finale has the wrong label.

As you can see from the below screenshot, Apple is still logging the finale as under an hour – which we know didn’t end up being true. The synopsis is a general overview of the show itself, with its attached image looking more like a Yellowstone character silhouette than the spinoff itself.
There’s a redirect to Paramount’s own app below that, where you’ll see all episodes listed correctly. If you press the Season 2 Episode 8 button on Apple TV, the double finale will play as originally aired.
Still, all of this has rightfully confused fans. One weighed in: “I’ll be that guy. Season 2 was meant to originally have 8 episodes but Paramount didn’t want to pay the actors extra for another episode so they combined episodes 7 and 8 into one episode to save money. That’s it.”
A second complained: “Well let’s use common sense here and assume it’s a glitch of some kind. I mean, isn’t that obvious?”
A third added: “It was combined to make it a more spectacular finish instead if cutting it off in the middle of the action. Season 1 was supposed to end at Episode 10 just like 1883 but instead was extended to two seasons because Taylor wanted the story to get a better send off and the same was done with S2E7.”

Originally, there was only supposed to be one season. But when Taylor Sheridan discovered he needed more time to tell this part of the Dutton family’s story, Paramount allowed him to split the show into two.
“Well, it’s really the second half of the season. This one is different than 1883 where I had the whole thing blocked out in my head,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
“This one, I had no idea what I was going to do. I just went on a journey myself and I’m the one who made the call to the network, which is probably the greatest call they ever got. ‘Hey, I need to make more episodes to finish this story. I need to do this in two blocks.’
“An eight-episode block and a second eight-episode block to wrap this up. I can’t wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice. For them, it is great because they get more content. For me, I get more runway.”
